ke ithuta setswana

June 3, 2009

i am learning setswana! its true. and kinda wild. mainly because my mouth has never made some of these sounds in its 24 years of speaking. its sneaky when tlha-, tla- and ka all sound the same but are extremely different. but i’m into day 2 of language learning and am loving it. secretly my head feels like its about to explode but i’m determined to persevere! plus my language helper is a huge blessing. her name is dikabelo and she is very outgoing, very willing to help and very eager to see me learn not only the language, but the culture too. she’s a definite answer to prayer.

also, i’ve been learning to drive this past week! this is hilarious and slightly terrifying. mainly because not only am i learning how to drive on the other side of the road but i’m also driving my first manual car…in gaborone…a city….with traffic circles, the trickiest of all because you have to change those gears all the time! last tuesday i only had two near death experiences and definitely drove off the side of the road. wednesday, no near death experiences but i did sit at a traffic circle for 5 minutes because i kept stalling. hah! people were honking, i was stalling, it was great. but guys i think i’m finally getting it. no news on a name for my quirky, teal toyota camry yet. i’ll get back to ya…

Too bad we never covered that at fpo, but it’s good that you’re biting the bullet over there. In WA, one of the Jgals emergency plan at one point was “call me, have me take a taxi for an hour to get her and then drive her into town in the car only her partner could drive.” Keep it up!

Not surprised by this. If you recall, you once drove off the side of the road somewhere near Bradford, TN. I would recommend not running from the police there either.

yah, I’m so glad your language training is going well! keep us updated on specific prayer requests! I have your little prayer card in my car, on our dresser, and on our frig :)
