365 and 21.1

April 11, 2010

one year ago today i arrived in botswana.

and what better way to celebrate a one year anniversary of epic proportions than to run your first half marathon?!

the goal was to finish, which we did in 2:38. woot!

i would also like to take a moment to officially thank the guys living in the housing development of benoni golf estates that let me use their bathroom mid-run. you were there for me when i needed you. you guys are a gem.

because after about 10ks we were definitely needing to go. i mean, it was cold and overcast – which means all that water that you’re taking in every 2.5ks is only going one place ya know? and when you need to go and you have 10 more ks to run, you have to seize the day. so i spot some guys standing around outside their house and while running past shouted to see if they would let me use their bathroom. and they were totally game. yep i peed in the strangers house. and i don’t regret it. so thank you, open bathroom guys!

lisa thought she could stand it but after about another k, she ducked under a tarp fence and ran into a construction zone because she spoted a portipotty. also beats going on the side of the road, which apparently here is all too customary. is that common everywhere? is this a half marathon/marathon running trend? do people think because they are hardcore runners that they can just stop on the side of the road in the middle of a race and pretend that they aren’t in a public visual zone? please reconsider.

all in all a great run – and will definitely add crossing that finish line to one of the best feelings ever.

    Hi:

A friend in Gabane Botswana told me about a half-marathon there and in surfing for more info I found your blog. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Molepolole in the 1980’s and found your entries interesting, especially the photos. They brought back fond memories!
