work in progress

August 16, 2010

discipline in doing one thing at a time and finishing a task is something i’m working on. always. i tend to start one project then have an idea for another and instead of finishing the first, i just begin the second until i have started twelve different things and finished none. i do this with books too. i’m currently reading about six. i think i just get so excited about the idea of making/reading/doing whatever it is i want to make/read/do that i just have to start it right now.

this pattern started to show as a kid. i wanted to be an astronaut, painter, lawyer, explorer, inventor, teacher and Olympics figure skater (or torch bearer) all in a two week span. which eventually leads to a kind of jack-of-all-trades condition. usually i love it, but sometimes i think it would nice to be jack of a little less trades and master some, you know?

one current project is a quilt for duke maddox. two of my greatest friends, cara and devin maddox are having their first child – duke – in december. i kid you not, by the time he can walk this little wee will be dressed like a pirate, playing mandolin and talking about bonhoeffer all at the same time. he will be awesome. and they will be the greatest parents, no question. congrats, cara and dev!

oh my goodness! this is the sweetest. it seriously made my week! it is just so cute; I loooove all of those fabrics! I can’t wait to snuggle this little guy in your quilt! how precious! seriously, a lovely and thoughtful gift. That is one of the things I love most about you, you are willing to take on hilariously awesome big projects for friends out of love (cookbook, teapot cake, etc.)

Plus, completely, utterly understand the discipline in projects… I am the queen of not having discipline in projects/ things I want to accomplish. I’m a great planner, a decent thinker-througher, but a horrible execute-till-the-end-er. (remember the time we stayed up for nights on end planning that cross-country road trip…) I could literally list easily 10 things I have started and have not finished. But, my problem is that I won’t let projects go even when I know I will probably never finish them; I make myself finish them (even if this is like 5 years later)or I have projects that just sit and look at me for years on end… I’m just too exciteable.
