lesson learned

November 13, 2010

so last night was our final friday night event of the semester for UB students (is the semester seriously over already!?) and usually on the first or last we’ll provide food…

…this is why at 4:30, 30 minutes before i’m supposed to meet our leader team to set up, i was making popcorn on my stove at home. now, i don’t have extensive experience making popcorn on the stove. i’ve made it a few times, but definitely not for a large group. so how was i supposed to know that when you buy a big 1 kg. bag you DON’T add half the bag to the only (medium-sized) pot that you have? the popcorn started popping and 8 seconds later when the pot was entirely full i realized “uh oh. i need to get this popcorn out so the rest can pop.” so i take the lid off and quickly pour out the popcorn on top into a big bowl i had on the counter. THEN as i was swiftly moving the pot back to the stove, it caught a plastic bag sitting next to the bowl and i unknowingly place the pot with plastic bag back on the burner. instant smoke. small flames. burning plastic. meanwhile because of the plastic burning i had forgotten to put the lid back on the pot so suddenly it’s everyman for himself. rapid fire popcorn grenades all over my kitchen. finally i get the lid back on, i’m giggling so much at the sight of this fiasco, then to realize that the pot is full again. but the bowl i had used last time is full so with no time to look for another, i just start dumping the popcorn all over my counters so that i can replace the pot on the burner to pop the rest. my kitchen is smokier than a q-zar, popcorn is literally everywhere, and at last the popping stops.

sorry yall weren’t here to see it.

Laughed so hard, the tears were covering up your words and I had to keep reading it over and over which just made me laugh even harder and more tears – thanks – you made my day – anyone for popcorn and a movie —

That was quite a fiasco, dear. How funny! …but somehow, not really surprising… :) Wish I could’ve been there!
